How Do I Pick My Major?
Hi there, friend!
Picking a major, although not the most important thing that will happen in your life, has a huge impact on what you will spend your time here at Clarke doing. No matter what year you are, if you are struggling with picking and sticking with a major, let me offer you a few pieces of encouragement/advice.
It is 100% okay to not know what you want to major in. I know that you’ve talked to so many people who have every inch of their lives planned out for the next five years, but don’t be too concerned if you don’t have that. College is a time of exploring careers, topics of interest, and finding out what you want to do in society.
On that point, please take the silly introduction to _____ classes. Even though they are a lot of work, they help you get a feel for what the entire department will be like with topics. Along the same lines, take advantage of professors office hours. Usually, they are waiting in their office for students to come ask them about course content, but they would be happier than ever to talk to you about what their department looks like and the requirements of the majors/minors.
Lastly, don’t forget what you want. The most important thing at the end of the day is for you to enjoy the work that you are doing. Don’t let anyone pressure you into signing up for a pre-med, pre-law, nursing, business, accounting, art, music, graphic design, or any other major. This degree will make your friends and family so proud, but it isn’t for them.
