Esports: The New Kid

By: Jaydon Dennis

Esports is a new sport that has recently joined Clarke University. This new sport was once a club and has recently changed during the fall semester of 2021, thanks to the new head coach and Esports Director Henry Johnston. He brought many teams and students ready to compete. Several students were glad to be given a chance to compete because not everyone gets a chance to compete in college. They were all given the chance to join nine teams. Those teams are Apex Legends, Call of Duty, FIFA, Fortnite, Hearthstone, League of Legends, Madden, NBA 2K, and Rocket League. And hopefully, there will be more teams and leagues to come.
Moving forward, let’s discuss the team’s first year of competition. This can be seen in detail on the Clarke Athletics website in the article “Clarke Esports wraps up fall 2021 regular season – Clarke University (clarkepride.com)”. However, here is a brief overview and insight into the accomplishments and progress of the teams.
The first example, Call of Duty Team Gold: Josiah Nichols, Peter Torres, Devon Wall, Diego Arenas, Dejon Harris, and Khalan Coleman got 22nd in the CDL. While the other team Navy: Ried Raisbeck, Samuel Swenor, Jaydon Dennis, and Anthony Hughes got 25th. For both teams, this is a great start within their first year. Another example is the NBA 2k team, which displayed multiple great showings by placing 5th with DeQuincy Young and Anthony Hughes, who placed 6th in the NBA 2K League. But this is just the beginning. The article stated previously can give a wider insight into the greatness of the team, so be sure to stay up to date with our new Esports team.
Overall, people should check out this new team! It is an avenue for a new way of competition and is filled with a great community of people. So, check it out on the Esports page in the athletic section of the Clarke Website. Or, check out the multiple points of view on the Crux website!!
