„If my life is a movie, what scene would make my trailer?” is the question asked by the new club “Stories to be told”. Club-President Joshua Musonda started the initiative to motivate students to tell their own stories and give them a stage to share their experiences.
Founded this semester, the new club “Stories to be told” focuses on the power of storytelling and sharing the stories from students who came from all over the country and the world, having lived very different lives and different experiences. The goal of the club is to expose universal commonalities, connections, wisdom and insights that inspire and enlighten others to embrace their own voice.
Joshua Musonda was inspired to create this platform, after volunteering at a speaking event called “CultureALL” in Des Moines. While speaking to students, Musonda was reminded of what he wanted to do and eventually put his thought into action. Having established the club now, he wants to empower students to become storytellers of their own lives and use the stage given to them. He believes “that while everyone has valuable experiences to share, many lack the tools and platform to do so.” The club encourages people to open up about the most personal things, because, according to Musonda, those thoughts are often the most universal ones and resonate with a wide audience.
This Sunday, October 20 at 7pm, the first two storytellers will perform in the Gallagher Lounge in the Student Activity Center. Jazz shares her spoken-word story “Hide and Seek” about her mother and Sulemani will open up about her view of “What is a man”. Musonda is excited about this new opportunity, because of “the transformative power of communication and memory sharing”. In the future, there will be more events planned and the club will offer support and workshops for anyone that is interested to become a better storyteller or communicator.
